Small Kitchen Remodeling Tips

Due to the increase in Vancouver real estate prices, modern condos in Vancouver are being built smaller and smaller each year. An area where these space cuts are often made is in the kitchen. A lot of developers would rather reduce the size of the kitchen over the living room or bedrooms. Some may agree it is the best way to compromise but it does not mean that you should not have a kitchen you can enjoy. Here are three renovation tips that will help you turn that small kitchen into a gathering hub for the family and for guests.

Keep It Open

This first tip is crucial. Keep small kitchens open and allow them to flow into the living room. Space deficiencies are most perceptible when enclosed. Tearing down dividing walls and turning the space into a kitchen island is the most obvious way of doing this. In older condos, this is often done with seamless execution. This does come at a price, but it will be worth every penny.

Quality Over Quantity

Since you don’t have much space to work with, you should opt for higher quality materials. Opting for higher quality cabinets and countertops will help create a feel that the kitchen is small by design. There is a difference between having a small kitchen because you don’t have enough space and having one because you don’t need any more space. Using higher quality materials will allow you to display that the kitchen gets the job done without taking up any “unnecessary space.”

Also keep in mind that higher quality appliances tend to be more sleek and better at maximizing space. Choose wisely when purchasing appliances for your small kitchen. Wall mounted ovens, microwaves and kitchens are a great way to save space.

Cabinet Lights

This last one is probably the one which catches most people off-guard but it is the one I’ve noticed helps with size perception. Having cabinet lights help create not only a luxurious look but also creates an atmosphere which makes smaller spaces appear much larger. LED lights around the trimming where the cabinets meet the backsplash work the best. Small kitchen remodeling tips are often full of gems, this is one of them. Another way to utilize trimming lighting would be through crown molding above the cabinets. All in all, cabinet lighting and trim lighting help grow the space and make the room look much larger and luxurious.
